The Secret of My Success... Yours too I bet...

I've been a big fan of many 'self help' gurus in my life.  My all time favorites are Anthony (Tony) Robbins, Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer.  I came from a background where I was told to never wish or want anything because then you won't be disappointed when you don't get it.  That really wasn't working for me.  In my very young life I was faced with possible divorce, extremely low self esteem, I wasn't much of a wife, mother or human being frankly.  I guess you call that rock bottom.  Something had to change.  I, of course, as many depressed indivuduals do watched TV nearly 24/7 and in the middle of the night something caught my attention.  It was a crazy energetic guy with a very large smile telling me everything I wanted to hear.  Well, I was a Navy wife and didn't have the money to buy what they were selling, but I did go to the bookstore the next day and buy one of his many books.  It changed my life.... now your story probably doesn't sound like this, but here is what I've learned....

The secret to my success in everything I've ever done is to beleive that I CAN DO IT!  If I want it, it's mine to be had.  What I think about I can possess.  Have you found that to be true?  If you are succssful, I bet you have.  If you find that you are struggling, ask yourself do you believe what I just said?  Are you looking for instances where this isn't true?

I'm 37 years old, I have a HAPPY marriage of almost 19 years.  (Yep, we turned it around and the best is now and in the future!)  I have 3 GREAT kids, the oldest of which turns 18 this year, graduates high school and starts culinary school (all in the same 2 month time window... can someone please get me a box of kleenex?).  My business has grown beyond anything I even dreamed in a fairly short window.  I've been featured in 3 magazines and was recently interviewed by MONEY Magazine as well.  I have the blessing of working with, teaching and mentoring women from all over the country in my training facility and continue to watch the outstanding work & blessings that this business has brought about.

So, In all the blogs that I read where there are people struggling, I ask now... What is your belief system?  Not what you tell the world, but what you tell yourself..... In your heart learn that you can have anything you want out of life AND that you deserve it... then GO FOR IT!

Melissa.  Great post.  My favorite saying is "you'll see it once you believe it".  The only thing holding people back is there own mind.  It's such a great feeling once you realize this.

Amen sister! I love your post, it is about what you bring upon yourself and with all the buzz about "The Secret" I am glad you put Anthony Robinson and his big ole grin in there..he really parallels with this new found "phenom" and we all could have been happier long ago!

Steven Covey is good as well...what was the name of your book ?

The timing of your blog is uncanny. We were just having a discussion last night on why things weren't progressing for us. In the conversation I asked if my husband really felt that he (and we) deserved success.

Needless to say I dug out my copy of The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz. I have had it for years and the pages are all dog-eared, it has set me straight in the past and I guess it is time to read it again!

Thanks for sharing such a personal part of your life. Think big, live bigger!

Michele,  The book was "Unlimited Power" by Anthony Robbins.  I had to immediately run out and get his next book, "Awaken the Giant Within".

Lucie.... maybe my timing was meant to provide you inspiration.... I don't believe in co-incidences....

Karen,

You must have posted that while I was typing my entry... thank you so much.... I love that quote!

Melissa, I too have Anthony Robbins book, dvds, tapes, etc. when I first got them my husband couldn't believe it, he's the skeptical type, suspicious of most self-help philosophies.  Then I realized don't justify things to people with closed minds just let them witness positive changes in your life and eventually they will get the picture.  I love AR and the people that make it up because they are positive and we should rejoice every time that one of us has a success in the business part as well as in our personal lives because good things are in store for all of us.  To remain stagnate is the worst disservice you can do to yourself and loved ones.  Congratulations on your victory and all your many ripples in the pond, you rock!

Power to the people!

I just thought I would start out big and loud :)

They say the longest journey is from the head to the heart. But when that journey is traveled, even for an instant, a life is changed forever. Harnessing the power within is a journey of self discovery and fulfillment. I know that once you start demonstrating everything you want, you will learn who you really are, and that is the lesson worth learning.

Joni,

My husband is the same way.  I have gone to the Tony's UPW seminar (well worth the $$$) and he says he'll just wait for me to make him a better person by being around me.  He tells me that I keep him on track.  He claims that he doesn't need improving - while I love him dearly, I think we ALL need a little improving now and again.  Just the same, he does come around to see things my way... the whole beleive in yourself and it will happen way.. actually it happened today.

He is in medical sales... lost a big sale to a competitor.  He was bummed because he really needed this sale to make goal for the fiscal year (ends next month).  He was like, "now I'm not going to make it."  We had a little pow wow pep talk.  By the end of the day he managed to get a surprise sale from one of his customers almost dollar for dollar as the one he lost earlier in the day.... ahhh... don'tcha love it?

"the road of SOME-DAY leads to the town of NO-WHERE"... another one of my favorite sayings....

Grettings Melissa,

Great Blog...you're an inspiration to us all.

A combination of most of the Great Motivators is good for us all, Try Zig Zigar, he been coaching us through his storey telling for many years. I personally studying with Michael Losier, he wrote "The Law of Attraction" a very gifted speaker at getting the idea across so you quickly understand the concept, Check out his book here at Amazon .com http://www.lawofattractionbook.com/  Listen to is Audio's, ...Join his Audio Club, then you can listen to hours of his teaching and "how to" material at your own leasure...and yes you can copy it onto your mp3 Player.

Maureen, Columbia is about an hour and a half away.  My son will be going to The Art Institute of Charleston in downtown Charleston.  He is very excited and already has a Sou Chef job at Bubba Gump when he starts - currenly he works for a local rib joint called Sticky Fingers.... good food!

Fred - Thanks for the tip.  I just ordered The Science of Success and The Secret, I'll add that book to my list next time.... I have some Zig Ziglar tapes and they are AWESOME!  My favorite is actually a TR tape where he is interviewing ZZ.  The Power Talk series by TR is fabulous for the very reason you described and you get a new master in every tape (CD).

Mellissa,

Thanks for your response...I'd love to hear TR interviewing ZZ, That'll be a collector item in a few years. Does Tony have this on his web site? And do you subscribe to him?

 Thanks, have an awesome day!

PS: Home staggers are not plentiful here, you're welcome anytime!

Fred,

I had a set of these actually in tape form, then technology being what it is now bought them again on CD.  They are called Power Talk and you can usually find the whole set on Ebay.  They are incredible!  TR interviews Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Steven Covey, Zig Ziglar, Marianne Williamson, etc... there are like 30 CD sets in all.  Each set comes with a lesson by TR and then 1-2 hour interview with a master.  I think the rate is usually around $150 for both sets.  I can't tell you how unbelievable these are....

Thank you for the warm welcome ....

Great post Melissa.  I have been feeling down lately about my staging business.  I am trying to keep a positive attitude but it is hard.  However, with that said I am going to try harder to believe that success is just around the corner and keep working on my positive thoughts.  Thanks for the great post!!

Melissa- Thanks for the timely reminder.  Even infinitely positive people have bad days (or weeks, sometimes!) and I must confess my recent history hasn't been stellar!  There is another author you may enjoy, she has a lighthearted and balanced approach to work and success.  Check out Chellie Campbell, she talks about swimming with the dolphins. . .and there are lots of them on AR, people who love to have fun, make money, and help others be the best they can! Thanks for your contributions!

Fred,  Thanks a bunch!  Looks like the seminar in my area has already passed.. bummer....

Kimberly, Lori, Sandra & Teri, I'm so glad to have been of service... I have 5 inspiring questions laminated on my bathroom mirror that I ask myself when I am brushing my teeth in the morning.  They are along the lines of, "What in my life right now brings me the most joy?".... then I ask follow up questions to those questions, "What can I do TODAY to improve this?"  I find this helps me get my priorities in order and remind me of the blessings that I already have in my life.  It certainly is difficult to be in a bad mood after reminding yourself of the 5 greatest things in your life.

Melissa, this blog brought a smile to my face. We should teach our children to brush their teeth, then look in the mirror and say, "Hey, I like you!!"

I find it is really the smaller things in life that remind us to be happy.  Did anyone see the movie, In PURSUIT of happyness?  (that was purposely mispelled - if you've seen the movie you understand).  It really is a pursuit.  Those who are least interested in learning about what makes us happy and how to improve our lives are typically the ones who who complain the most and are the least content.

Hi Melissa....great blog.

To me ATTITUDE is everything... it's amazing what you can attract in to your life with the right attitude.

As for negative thinking in a previous life...I credit Brian Tracy's "Psychology of Achievement" series for turning me around.

good luck and remember to have fun out there.

Posted by Alan Taylor, CRSS - Willoughbys (Willoughbys) over 11 years ago

Hi Melissa.... in my last response I mentioned that attitude is everything...... well it seems that I'm not the only one with that thought. In this months "Selling Power" newsletter Barry J. Farber says "A person with a positive attitude will always win out over someone who dwells on the negative". He also gives the following suggestions:

To help you develop the discipline, desire, and dedication of a superachiever, start by making these five positive changes:

1. Start every day on a positive note. Take 15 minutes to read or listen to a positive motivating message. Invest in some motivational books, tapes, or a daily calendar that features inspiring quotes or anecdotes.

2. Avoid negative news. Tabloid newspapers, magazines, and many television programs focus on bad news and sensational headlines. Be selective about the information you absorb every day.

3. Avoid gossip for 30 days. When people around you gossip or turn negative, change the subject or walk away. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything.

4. Keep a positive events diary. What did you do well today? What did you accomplish? Write down any compliments or praise you received. Nothing is too small or trivial to include. Review your diary at the end of the week for a motivational boost.

5. Look for the good in everyone you meet. Try to compliment at least three people every day, and eliminate unconstructive criticism. Focusing on the good in others will help you find it in yourself as well.

If you want to succeed like a superachiever, start thinking and acting like one. Many superachievers haven't always been positive thinkers, but they recognize the importance of attitude and make a conscious effort to take control of their thoughts and their future. To follow in their footsteps, set a goal and dedicate yourself to accomplishing it. You just might realize the superachiever potential you didn't think you had.

Good luck and have fun

Posted by Alan Taylor, CRSS - Willoughbys (Willoughbys) over 11 years ago

Alan,

Thanks for sharing your "Selling Power" Newsletter.  I have heard those things before but it is always great to be reminded of them.

For those who are reading who are thinking of following the above suggestions, let me caution you on one thing... those closest to you are seldom happy when you change - regardless of whether the change is positive or negative.  You will likely find resentment or downright mean-ness by some of those you feel are closest to you.  Just remember, if they truely are your friends or loved ones, then once you've proven your new outlook they will not only be happy for you, but often follow suit.  People are simply afraid of change.  Work through the struggle.  Only those things worth working & fighting for are worth having.

What a great inspiration.  Thank you for sharing.  Bottom line is ... always believe in yourself.  One of my favorite quotes is "You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore".  I'm sorry I don't know who wrote that.

Hi Sandy...... the person who made the quote regarding the ocean was Lord Chesterfield.
