St Augustine, St Johns County Real Estate & Home Staging

Are you pulling out a TV dinner or making a feast fit for a King?

I was talking about this with my fellow stager Linda Barnett in Indianapolis the other day. She is so right. I never would have put it together without her, but now I'll be using this in my conversations when I try to explain the importance of preparation for a memorable showing.

Thanksgiving is only a few days away. We've started seeing more and more commericials and print advertisements selling all of the elements that make up a great Thanksgiving. If you look, you'll not only find delicious meals, but beautiful tablescapes, and small elements that make up the foundation of this long lived tradition. Most of us spend days cleaning, decorating, and cooking, preparing for a meal that takes about 30 minutes to devour.

Why do we spend so much time working for one tiny meal?

We do it becuase this is a moment in time where we want to create a strong memory imprint. The sights and smells will remind us of this day in the future when we try to recall it.

Selling a home without staging is like pulling out a TV dinner on Thanksgiving

All of the things that I mentioned about creating a memorable Thanksgiving dinner, or better yet, a better Thanksgiving memory, are also true when selling your home. This includes the end goal of creating a strong memory imprint.

At the end of a weekend, buyers may have viewed a dozen homes that they'll need to decide between. They'll mentally go through all of the homes and chose the one based on the memory of each one. What was stuck in their mind about your home?

Just like Thanksgiving, it's all of the work that you put in before the big day that makes the difference. Cleaning, planning, and prep work will make showings go smoothly and provide a more memorable experience.

Imagine Thanksgiving as if it were handled like any other day of the year. Family and friends called maybe the day before and said that they were coming by for dinner. You had to work, the kids were sick last week, and you've barey had a moment to clean and shop, much less plan the menu. Sadly, this is how most homes are sold. The seller decides that they want to sell, but they do no prep work. They have no menu planned. They know that people will be coming to the home, but they've done nothing to prepare. You might as well pull out a TV dinner for Thanksgiving because it will have the same effect as showing without preparation.

Consider the similarities of Preparing your Holiday meal to Preparing your Home for Sale.

As you spend the next week getting your home ready for friends and family, as you prepare your menu, decorate your home or your holiday table, consider how many similarities there really are. Now imagine what the effect to your special day would be if you didn't do any of that. That's what you just might be leaving off the table if you don't stage each of your listings.
