Home Staging Tips: How to hang curtains and draperies in your Chicago home

Hanging curtains is probably one of my least favorite tasks. Having the proper techniques and tools always makes the job a little easier. For home staging, it is recommended that the panels be light weight and always opened to allow maximum lighting into the home.

As a professional home stager in Chicago, we often have to tell home owners to remove their curtains and draperies. Occasionally, we will tell them to hang some, however. So long as the draperies as open and allow light to come into the room, there are a lot of benefits that curtains and draperies can bring.

The benefits of curtains and draperies to your Chicago home

Whether you are staging your home to sell, or staging to live, sometimes fabric panels can be the best friend for windows. Curtains and draperies can provide:

  • added height to windows
  • texture and color to an otherwise boring room
  • width to walls and windows
  • a fixed focal point
  • accented emphasis to a great view

How to hang curtains and draperies the right way

This great tutorial video by Pottery Barn showcases the right way to hang curtains and draperies. The right tools, which include a sturdy measuring tape, level, drill, and ratcheting screw driver can make all the difference. I will say that this video doesn't showcase the ratcheting screwdriver, but honestly, you really should have one (or you could change out your drill bits with a screw driver tip, particularly if you have to do a lot of rods).
