I asked a question about AR & AuthorRank. What Happened Next was Shocking

I asked a question about AR and AuthorRank. What Happened Next was Shocking...

Jumping feet first into the Google Plus pool, I've been trying to learn everything I can about the subject. Google Plus is more than a social media platform, it is SEO. Frankly, I've been over Twitter and Facebook for a while, but maintain a presence there because my business needed it, well, or at least that has been my premise. I joined Google Plus eons ago and felt like it was a Ghost Town. Crickets chirping when I was there. Right... nothing to see here, move along.

AuthorRank led me to back to Google Plus

Then this funny thing called AuthorRank moved in and suddenly all at the same time I heard people talking about how to get their pretty face on Google. I was actually two days away from meeting with someone who said he could do it for me, when I found Michael George telling me how to do it. Ok, so it took about 2 weeks for my face to appear on Google SERPs but now I've got it, not only with my AR blog, but my outside blog, and every other blog that I own. Woo hoo!

I was feeling really good, until I ran across Mike Arnesen's post in SEOmoz, How to Prepare for AuthorRank and Get the Jump on Google

seo moz mike arsnesen

I am pretty confident that I finished the rest of the article in a panic after I read these words...

"Here are a few things that are certain to destroy your AuthorRank as badly as Penguin destroyed sites with questionable backlink profiles:
  • Publishing content on blog networks."
Uh, what? Panic attack big time!!

Off to Google Plus I go to start asking some questions... hopefully someone will have the answer for me.

authorship and activerain

What I didn't expect was WHO would have the answer for me....

mike arnesen google authorship

But my excitement doesn't stop there. You may notice that the screen shot above is actually not a screen shot from Google Plus. Rather this is a screen shot from Mike Arnesen's presentation on Google Plus AuthorRank that happened last night.

Since part of the point of AuthorRank is Google determining how important you are in the eyes of others, networking and interacting with thought leaders is an important part of the equation. Needless to say that I'm excited to have possibly earned a little more credit in the eyes of Google by having Mike connect with me, and interact socially on real estate and SEO.

Why I'm with Eric Proulx on the virtues of Google Plus

While I'm on that subject, I would like to back up Eric Proulx, who consistently extols the virtues of Google Plus. Unlike Facebook, on Google Plus, you can share your circles with people, so you can let others know who you think may be important to follow, or integrate into your business. The number of people who have circled me went from about 50 to nearly 900 in only about three weeks thanks to circle shares. The vast majority of people who I'm following and are following me are people who have similar interests, affiliates of the real estate industry (Realtors, Home Stagers, Flooring Experts, Mortgage Brokers, etc), SEO, and scifi (one of my favorite hobbies).

While I have a lot of followers on my personal Facebook page, most of the interaction has been likes and the occassional conversation. On Google Plus, I've actively been learning things that will improve my business, my blogging, and SEO, as well as making new friends.

If you are ready to make the leap to Google Plus, be sure to circle me, but make sure you do a few things first

Thank you for reading... I asked a question about AR and AuthorRank. What Happened Next was Shocking...

This is SO awesome to see / read / hear. I'm seeing it as I read it out loud to myself. I am going to share this everywhere I can. EXCELLENT story of how G+ is amazing for professionals.

Posted by Eric Proulx (RealEstate.com) almost 6 years ago

Melissa, when I saw his slideshow with you included I said wow, he is listening & sharing which is so good for all of us on Google+...so funny that he has not heard of AR...it reminds us we are small fish in a big pond don't you think?!

Google+ is sooo addicting... the more we use the site, the stronger we all become....suggested.....

Randy - thank you...

Eric - you are so funny... thank you for resharing this on G+!

Ginny - I'm so bummed that I missed it. I probably would have fallen out of my desk chair and lie catatonic on the floor anyway. lol... it was a wonderful surprise to wake up to. I'm really happy to know that AR isn't included in his meaning of 'blog community'. It always surprises me when people don't know what AR is. I guess if you aren't in real estate, then you just wouldn't know.

Melissa, you are a quick study, and it's been fun getting to know you a little bit on Google+.

I don't think people should look at Google+ as a substitute for ActiveRain, but rather a perfect supplement. Content is still King, but Google+ is Queen.

David - Yes, I'm pretty sure I circled you back last night. I remember your avatar.

Carla - Staging your brand is probably the best thing you can do for your business. Since I sold my SC Staging company and am currently recreating my brand, which includes a decent working knowlege and understanding of changing SEO, marketing, and social media, this is good for my brand.

Debbie - Thank you for calling that to my attention this morning. Sometimes with the timezone change from West Coast to east coast I miss wesst coast webinars. I'm really disappointed to have missed that.

Tamara - I downloaded a wordpress plugin for my other blogs. Try that. Just look up google authorrank or authorship.

AuthorRank will definitely unfold over 2013 as Google continues to push G+ and other social signals into search. However, G+ probably won't be the end all be all when it comes to search. Recently, Bing has been gaining ground in the search world (as is Blekko) and Bing takes into account Facebook likes/interactions to create better results. Bing is not near as large or commands as much of a presence from search marketers, it is important not to forget it.

Posted by Evelyn Kennedy, Alameda, Real Estate, Alameda, CA (Alain Pinel Realtors) almost 6 years ago

Jenny - apparently the answer is to justs jump in. Look for people who you have a common interest with (like any of the AR people) and ask the to share circles with you so you can find more quickly. Be sure your profile is filled out and that you already have something on your profile page for people to see who you are and what your interests are.

Bill - I did! What a great find. Thank you!

Toby - I certainly won't give up Bing, but honestly, with FB and it's new EdgeRank the point of updating your facebook business seems futile.

Karen - I know you are crazy busy, but as always I love to see your smiling face everywhere!

Kathy - you are welcome!

Evelyn - Ah, what fun... something else to be grateful for, right?

Congratulations on being featured. Great blog post. I tried to get authorship up and running, but Michael George never responded to my questions and I still don't know why Google+ points to my home page rather than my blog page. I'll try reading the Michael Amesan's blog and see if that helps. I'm glad yours is working. That gives me hope. Dana

I put in for authorship on Google about a month ago and I just received an email today saying it was up and running. I'm a little confused about what you said though. We shouldn't post blog posts?

Dana - I put in a request to Michael (on G+) to look at your question. Another benefit of G+

Jill - No! If you read the answer from Mike then you'll see he gave AR a pass on this because it provides valuable consumer content.

Posted by Melissa Marro, Jacksonville Real Estate and Home Staging (Keller Williams First Coast Realty - The Marro Team) almost 6 years ago

Never mind. I just read the entire conversation thread and feel more confident that Michael wasn't referring to ActiveRain.
