Why I didn't circle you back on G+

Why I didn't circle you back on G+

Have you been reading everyone's blogs as they go Ga-Ga for Google? For many, they still just don't get it. If you are one of the people who have created a profile, and added a bunch of people to your circles, but still feel like you don't have any traction, ask yourself if you are guilty of any of these?

You filled out only the minimum necessary on your Google Plus profile.

*GASP* if you are still a faceless entity on Google Plus, chances are you have almost no one circling you. This is probably the first thing you need to change. Don't stop there though.
Change your cover photo too. If you still have that green bar going across your profile, find a photo you like in your portfolio, and update!
What do you do? Do I know? I can't tell you how often I have someone circle me and their profile doesn't tell me why I want to circle them back. If I don't know, then chances are, I'm not circling you back.
why I didn't follow you on G+  why should I follow you on g+ profile
If I'm not really sure if I want to add you to my circles then sometimes I'll check out your profile. If there isn't a single post there. I'm gone. Why bother? When do you think I'll look at circling again? Probably not until you've become interesting on either my feeds, or the feeds of someone else I converse with.
Don't just talk about your stuff either. The people I add usually talk about other people and share interesting articles. (Ok, and I like Scifi, so I tend to follow a lot of geeky/nerdy types too.)

Your profile is good, so now engage with me

Please whatever you do, don't add a bunch of people and then send them a message that says "Hi, thanks for connecting with me." Sure, that seems nice, but when I hit your wall and that's all I see, I'm afraid you are a fake person aka spammer.
Do engage with me. I can tell you that every time someone likes my status updates or links, or takes the time to comment or share my links, I look at who you are. If I like other stuff you share, I will circle you. If I'm circling you, I'm also more likely to +1, comment and share on your feeds.

The #1 sin for me is when the person does not interact. It would be like someone commenting on one of my posts here and then never answering them or dropping a comment on their blog. Communication is a two way street. Sin #2 is that same person that just dumps all their garbage into the site and does nothing else but. That is called SOCIAL MEDIA FAIL!

Melissa.. this is a good explanation on the why of adding people to your circle. When I was introduced to Google+ I added everyone.. as the process made no sense to me.. Now i get it..not all of it,, but a good deal more than before! In order to be worth being added to a circle means that you have to share.. Social Media.. is definitely ... social!

Bill - *sigh* I know this one very well too. The one thing I've really enjoyed about G+ so far is that it is very communicative. It seems pretty usual for there to be a 20-50 comment deep thread... I love that.

Janis - Funny how people so easily forget the social. I would also say that you probably need to be positive more than negative. I have someone who I recently unfollowed who was always negative. Sure they were interactive, but I want inspiring stuff, not constant rants.

Dorie - Thank you! I appreciate the compliment.

Marti - Thank you for the cookies! I think I'll go grab some milk to go with them.

Melissa - Just like Active Rain, Google + is a give and take platform.  If you don't interact, share and support each other, there's no point in being there.

I absolutely agree and see many who dump their posts on G+ on a daily basis and spend no time interacting.  Give and you will get back.

Awesome post, Melissa. I'm like you.... if the profile isn't filled in, or, if I have to go digging, I won't circle them back.

I guess I just need to get more with it and get over the fact that I need to spend much more time on the social media pariah. I am just a much more pick up the phone person.

It's all so overwhelming to me...I'm working on it though...I did get a picture up for the cover photo yesterday.  I really appreciate your posts on the subject.

Hi Melissa, Very informative. I've followed your quest through various posts to picture yourself on google+ and found them very interesting. Thanks for sharing! So far I have learned I'm a social networking and blogging train wreck!
