How do you search Google? Are you using advanced features?

How do you search Google? Are you using advanced features?

A few weeks ago I was talking to my friend Juliet Johnson, a social media expert. She was mentioning that she was trying to research some new feature that one of the many sites was rolling out. Then she mentioned that she would search articles by date..... "What? You can do that?" is what went through my head. I didn't want to sound like I didn't already know how to do this. (I like to think I'm pretty good at SEO, searches, social media, etc and I figured, uh oh, everyone knows how to do this already & I didn't want to sound like I was out of the loop,) Right, so off to Google I go to figure this out....
Now you see, I knew that I could alter my searches between my views by switching between the little man or the globe. This would tell me what Google thinks is relevant by what my past searches or friends recommend/think about (man icon) or what's simply top ranking in Google (world icon). I've even noticed the gear icon below it, but clicking on advanced search I didn't find much of anything useful.

What I seemed to have missed is the little bar on the left that says, "Show search tools"  Watch what happens when I click on it....

Now how helpful do you think this would be to filter results for a subject that you know just came out in the last week, or that was out in springtime, last fall, etc? What if you only wanted to look for something (like a tutorial) that included photos, or a page that you knew you had already visited? It's like a whole new world has opened up. Suddenly searching just got a lot easier!
BTW, on a side note, have you ever noticed how different your search results are when you select the personal results (man) or the non-personal results (globe) are? My blogs are highlighted in gold above. The second screen shot is from the non-personal results. I find it perplexing (though I suppose positive) that in my personal searches I actually rank lower than I do in the general searches. I wonder what that means...

Melissa- I am reading and thinking that no, I never tried to filter anything. More and more I notice that I am using things at 1% of their capacity
