St Augustine, St Johns County Real Estate & Home Staging

The Spiritual Rewards of Home Staging

I love what Pamela has to say here. When asked what I do for a living my answer is usually something trite like, "I market real estate". But maybe what I should say is "I market real estate so people can move forward with their lives." After all, I'm part psychologist and part marketer. I help sellers disconnect and buyers connect.

Every Home Stager I know professes that they love what they do.  They were born for it, and share a passion for perfect placement, harmony and transformation.

But maybe there's something more to it than what you see on the surface.

After all, it's not always easy.  In fact, the work can get pretty grueling, tedious, tiresome, financially unrewarding at times.  We have all had more than our share of having to deal with a number of less than desirable personalities and less than polite individuals.  In the several years I have been doing this, I have encountered some pretty bizarre tales; they would be a good start for some collection of short stories a la Stephen King variety.

It's like they say, you really do have to love it to stay in the business.

Is it really the furniture 'sclepping' that we love? Or, is it that we are making changes....Not so much changes in the physical appearance of the home. What about the people?

Every time we step into a home, we are entering into the lives of a family.  No matter what, this is one of life's most stressful experiences.. right up there with marriage and divorce.  People are often overwhelmed, their homes chaotic. and they are in need of some guidance, some kindness from the outside. Usually, they were not expecting to move so fast, or to have to think of packing and getting rid of furnishings or making changes to their homes in order to market their property.

Perhaps they react with some hostility towards us for suggesting changes, perhaps sarcasm or denial. Herein lies the opportunity to not only explain the values of what we offer in terms of merchandising their home, but also to reach them on a bit deeper level of understanding.  Somebody cares about them, and listens.

Maybe, just maybe, we are part psychologist, part therapist.  We listen, we reassure.  Everything will be fine.  We are here to help.  Do not worry.  We interact as a calming influence in a difficult time.

The reward is the same. At the end, the smiles are our reward. The sounds of sighs of relief are our reward. Yes, everything will be fine.
