What should I write about today?

What should I write about today?

If you are like 99% of the blogging community, you experience writers block. We all write for different reasons. It could be to gain traffic through SEO, to showcase our knowledge and skills, to build relationships, or even sometimes just to get your thoughts out there (as a form of expression). Some days the words flow from our fingertips, while other days we sit staring at a blank screen. Just remember, you aren't alone.
blogging adviceFor me, when faced with this dilemma, I usually ....
  • Think about the last question I had from a customer, potential customer, or peer. There is a good chance that if one person asked, there are a bunch of people who won't. This is the old adage from school that no question is a dumb question, except the one not asked.
  • Determine what business I recently did that I could turn into a blog. Do I have great customer service, before and after photos, a funny story to tell?
  • Look through really old posts. Sometimes I'll use posts that really had no traction and try to revisit them to see if I could do a better job this time. Sometimes I'll do a different take on a popular post, or expand on the concept.
  • Focus on a community - AR likes to call this hyperlocal blogging. It doesn't matter what your business type, we all want to work in a given area, don't we? As a stager, I know there were neighborhoods that I did a lot of work in. Now that I've switched to a Realtor, there should still by niche's that I want to develop.
  • Speaking of niche's .... hello..... shouldn't you be able to talk all day about your given niche?
  • Finally, you could do a fluff piece. Have you noticed that sometimes the most popular posts are really fluff pieces? It gives us a great chance to get to know someone - and that is part of the beauty of a blog. Seriously, don't you love following someone because you feel like you are their friend? Do you feel that way about someone who is all business all the time?
Blogging shouldn't be a chore. It may need to be a habit though. Just like going to the gym, going to a local networking meeting, or making that annual exam appointment. Often the hardest part is showing up. Once you do that, the rest is easy.

Melissa you've really gotten back into blogging with a vengance - in a great way! I always learn something from you and appreciate your perspective. Especially now that you've combined your staging skill set with your Realtor hat, you're a powerful combination and I see big things coming your way in NE FL - hopefully no more hurricanes though!

Hey Melissa~ I reallty like bullet #3, re-visiting an old post that didn't get much traction.  We should be getting better at this with time right, so maybe we can re-write that post and bring it back to life.  I'm gonna give it a of these days.  My biggest issue is time.  Just not enough of it!

Ah Melissa, We both know I am your real motivation for finding reasons to blog.  But you have met your match and now you are but dust in my rearview mirror.

Keep trying.  Maybe I will take a sick day if you are lucky.  NAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Karen - thank you!! Writing is something that usually helps me unwind the thoughts in my head. Since I'm embarking on a new path, I know that I need to be sure to maximize my credibility and start picking up SEO for various search topics... this is the best way to do both for me. (I hope)

Donna - It's funny but as we change and write more, we do find different ways to communicate. Although I have to be honest, sometimes I think some blogs will be a big hit and fall completely flat, then others are a complete surprise. I do not have this figured out... =)

Kevin - Well, you certainly are part of it!!  I actually was a pretty prolific writer in days gone by, but had taken a break... well, not really, I was just writing for my blog outside of AR (and I was managing an arts/crafts site similar to AR, which was taking up a lot of time). Funny, by the end of most days I'm still just a little bit ahead of you. Yesterday may have been an exception because my husband just got home after being gone for 8 days and AR kept giving me error messages when I did try to get on. Just wait.... We'll see who gets to #50 first =)

Great suggestions here...and since I regularly suffer from writer's block, I am sure these will be helpful hints for me for the future.

Melissa- almost anything can be turned into a subject for a post.. we just have to get into the habit of looking at things as possibilities for a blog.  You've been doing a wonderful job of blogging!!   Does this mean I have to comment on Kevin's and your post to be fair!? LOL

Susan - I hope it does help.

Kathy - Do you see that attitude? Don't give Kevin any help =)

Hey Melissa~ I find the same thing.  It's really hard to judge what will be "successful" blogging-wise.  I think a lot of it has to do with timing.  I'm finding that Tuesday morning posts for me are generally the ones that get the best attention.

Donna - That's interesting. Why do you think that is? Is there something that happens on Monday or Tuesday morning that inspires you to write better blogs?

Not really sure Melissa.  There are so many factors that they play in the "success" of a post.
