Speaking Up about Home Staging

Headboards - how to go small, light & budget concious!

I've had to stage A LOT of homes lately.  Bedrooms always throw me a little out of whack when I run low on inventory.  There is so much to buy!  Headboards, box springs (I use 2 boxsprings instead of inflatables), nightstands, lamps, linens & the occassional dresser simply eat away at my budget.  One area I have found myself getting better at is the headboard issue.  Since I've started doing this I've found it is much easier on the budget & arms (carrying them upstairs!).  The only thing is you had better be good with a ruler & level!

Check these out....

These headboards are all made from iron (or other metal) artwork.  In the first two photos they were 2 pieces hung side by side.  In the bottom 2, they were a single longer piece turned on its side.  All of them were done for less than $80.  They are lightweight, easy to hang & easy to move and store!

Really nice! We have also plan to use frames with fabric in the middle. We also saw empty frames hung above a bed that looked really good. Can never have enough ideas. Thnaks for the post.

Melissa- You are a girl after my own heart.  I love to come up with creative headboards!  I use iron work a lot and have used odd things like flowers, kites and artwork.  I have one actual headboard, but it is really a foot board that I got for a steal.  We extended the legs for height and it works great, but I prefer to use alternatives, because that thing is heavy!  Great examples - I can't wait to hear what others have come up with!

I used a table runner once. Back in the day when things weren't quite so slick -

This was a King.  I think it would have looked a lot better on a Queen.

What at crummy photo! Cameras are so much better know, as is the MLS.

That's a very good idea. I also saw recently where someone put a folding screen as a headboard... It looked very nice.

Melissa, This is so much fun. We recently picked up a long French bulletin board to use as a headboard. Talk about light weight! You and Kim have the very best headboard ideas and you both get the juices flowing for the rest of us. Thank you!

Melissa - these look much more interesting than traditional headboards.  Do you have a favorite source to purchase these?

Looks wonderful, Melissa.  What a great alternative to the traditional headboard!

Maureen H - I've found several at Ross for Less (with great prices).

Melissa,

wonderful idea, I have even used a 3 piece Oriental silk room divider, and just backed the air-beds up to them to hold the divider in place and it looked wonderful as well.

Best wishes~ Brian Bloom

Juliet - table runner.... mind if I steal that one?  There are some great bamboo ones in Target that I bet would work great!

Maureen - Pier 1 & Kirklands.  The discount there adds to the appeal.  The 2nd photo were two metal wall art pieces priced at $20 ea + the 10% designers discount... so they cost all of what $38?  Find a nice headboard for that price anywhere else....

Angie - I use screens all the time.  The problem is that it is hard to find them for less than $150-$200.  I'm cheap... lol!!  Seriously I have to buy just too many & they are much heavier.  If I can get a deal on them then I buy them..... most of the time I am reusing them from a time where I actually needed a screen & repurposed it later.

Thanks everyone else for your positive comments!

What I have done is use chip board (cut to size) & wrap it with batting & material. They work very nice - and light weight. I'm going to experiment with using material & sew in elastic - so I can have lots of colors to change out to match the bedding. Sorry you can't see it too well.

Brilliant!  I love those iron artwork.  What a great idea.  I had a similar idea using using placemats, only I ised them as artwork.  I am on vacation and can't access my photos since they are on my computer and I need to submit photos. Anyways, I see a blog coming on. Thanks for the inspiration (and my blog subject).

Melissa, the headboards look great. Regular head boards can definitely be difficult to move.

I am really into these metal frame thingy now (not sure what you call them) because they are just so much more interesting visually and different from the regular artwork. And I love you use them as headboards! That's very clever. I personally don't use headboards at all, but I probably should just to make life more interesting!

Cheers,

Love the headboards!  Here's an example using a folding screen in a condo I staged recently (Pier 1, bought at the huge discount sale at Big Lots) ...

I have a question, how are you propping up the airbeds?  Are they on boxes or crates?  I've tried to do it this way but I haven't been able to find boxes that is the right height for bedskirts. Either tehy are way too tall or too shallow.  M.
Posted by Marcyne Touchton (Domaine Staging) over 2 years ago
Marcyne - I don't use airbeds.  I use box springs (2 per bed).  I've had bad luck with blow ups.  I use sterlite boxes that are about 8" deep.  When I can find bedframes cheap I use those instead.  Needless to say they are always the right height!

we jive in  an old house and the upstairs is cloesed in and we cannot get a box spring up the stairs.  Is there any sulution to this problem?

Posted by sylvia weider over 2 years ago
Sylvia - if the bedroom is large, you could go to a King bed (the box springs are basically the size of 2 twins - only longer).   We had to stage a room like this once & we used a mattress for the box & a blow up for the mattress.... I guess to live here you could use a mattress + mattress.  The best bet for this situation is probably to buy a bed with high rails & wood slats.  Then use plywood (either chipboard or mdf) over the slats for more stability (or a mattress that doesn't require a box - ask your bedding specialist to show you which ones those are).  I hope this has given you some ideas!
